Every day many promises are made, but few are kept, especially when it comes to low-income people. The Census Bureau reports that not only have poverty rates climbed for a fourth straight year, but more than 37 million Americans now live below the federal poverty level.
The Walk to End Poverty hosted by the City of Oakland Community Action Partnership, in collaboration with other local anti-poverty fighting organizations, will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2007, around beautiful Lake Merritt in Oakland. This community walk is intended to raise awareness about the conditions of the 76,469 people who live in poverty within the City of Oakland and to raise funds to help support local anti-poverty fighting organizations that provide assistance to those who are trying to break the cycle of poverty. Local agencies providing services to Oakland’s low-income residents, community organizations, and the community at-large are encouraged to participate in the event by organizing teams of supporters to walk.
A Community Fair will be held immediately following the walk to educate and inform the expected 400 participants about opportunities and supports available to assist Oakland’s low-income community. Elected officials will also be on hand to talk about strategies for eradicating poverty in the City of Oakland and entertainment will be provide by local artists committed to social change.
This event provides an annual forum for local activist, advocates, elected officials and the community at large to come together to ensure that the issue of poverty remains on the local, state and federal agenda.
“Poverty must not be a bar to learning and learning must offer an escape from poverty”
Lyndon B. Johnson
