One
of OFCY's primary interests is to fund initiatives
and programs providing comprehensive afterschool
activities and programs for children and youth
in public schools. Programs and services provided
at a public school that are also sites for the
state funded 1) 21st Century Afterschool Learning
Center and 2) Afterschool Educations and Safety
Partnership funding are working closely with the
OFCY to best maximize limited resources through
coordination.
Twenty-four 2-year grants were awarded in order
to allow programs to develop, build capacity,
and demonstrate impact on student achievement
and program outcomes. The two-year grant is
renewable for 2005-2006.
The comprehensive afterschool programs are collaborative,
school based, and provide a wide variety of
afterschool activities. They include academic,
recreation and enrichment components and may
include a wide range and choice of activities
in order to address all three essential components
of afterschool programming. All programs are
offered a minimum of 5 days a week for at least
3 hours per day.
The Afterschool Initiative places a strong emphasis
on neighborhoods in Oakland that are underserved.
To the extent possible, grants are distributed
geographically across the City.
