Walk Information
The Walk to End Poverty hosted by the City of Oakland Community Action Partnership, in collaboration with other local organizations that work to end poverty, will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010, around beautiful Lake Merritt in Oakland. The community walk aims to raise awareness about the conditions of the 76,489 people who live in poverty and violence within the City of Oakland. Local agencies providing services to Oakland’s low-income residents, community organizations, and the community at-large are encouraged to participate in the event by organizing teams of supporters to walk.
A Community Fair is held immediately following the walk to educate and inform participants about opportunities available to assist Oakland’s low-income community. Elected officials and other guests will also be on hand to talk about strategies for eradicating and preventing poverty in the City of Oakland. Local artists committed to social change will be on hand to provide entertainment for the day. Community service, leadership and youth service awards will be given to nominated individuals in honor of there efforts in making a difference in the lives of Oakland’s low-income communities.
This event provides an annual forum for local activists, advocates, elected officials and the community at large to come together to ensure that the issue of poverty and violence remains on the local, state and federal agenda.
