Senior Companions & Foster Grandparents

Who Are Senior Companions?

Senior Companions are healthy older adults who help other adults live as independently as possible in their respective communities. Senior Companions provide support to family caregivers. They assist with the placement of resources, connecting seniors to services, grocery shopping, escorting and “helping” with other daily tasks necessary to maintaining independence.

What is a Foster Grandparent?

Foster Grandparents are older adults who offer love, wisdom and support to children. They assist children and youth in schools, hospitals, drug treatment centers, correctional institutions, Head Start and day care centers.

Taxi Up & Go (TU&GO) – A new service to fill paratransit gaps

Actia Logo  In July 2008, the Senior Companions Program (SCP) received a two year Measure B Gap Grant through the Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority (ACTIA) to collaborate with Oakland Paratransit for the Elderly and Disabled (OPED) to expand paratransit services to SCP clients who are mono-lingual, frail and or socially isolated with limited access to health care and daily activities.

SCP Volunteers are issued OPED’s taxi scrip in order to accompany SCP clients on medical and daily activity trips to get clients out of the house and into the community.

If you would like to know more about the service, please contact the SCP at (510) 238-3038. To read more about ACTIA, please click http://www.actia2022.com/.
